Monday 25/10/2021 will be a date that owners Phillip Westbury and Kerry Green will never ever forget.
It was the day that Phil Westbury trained an astonishing double at Globe Derby Park
The double was in race 2 Giftedfromtheheart and in the following race Giant Jackson
Both horses winning for the owners for the first time , Giftedfromtheheart breaking its maiden status
Both driven by young Nicholas Brown
Giftedfromtheheart was having its 8th career start , began well, took a trial behind the leader , ran on well in the home straight to win comfortably
Sired by the outstanding imported sire Shadow Play from All By Chance
All by Chance was obtained from Victoria by the Westbury Green stable , raced in South Australia after a near 3 year lay off
All By Chance’s career lasted 7 runs with trainer Phil Westbury, without a win
Ironically Giftedfromtheheart also had no winning success after 7 runs, winning at its 8th attempt for the stable
Running on late in the race for 2nd was the luckless Trapper Two, driven by the promising Jason Kittel
Therefore the two junior drivers Nicholas Brown and Jason Kittel ran the quinella in the race against five other very accomplished senior drivers
All of this happened in race 2 , the 1197 VA Radio Harness Racing Show Pace , a radio show hosted by the popular duo of Gary Newton , our current Botra Vice President and the youthful, hard working industry enthusiast Lachlan Stace
Giant Jackson impressively won the the Bianco Reinforcing Pace at its 17th run for the Westbury Green stable
Nicholas Brown decided to restrain Giant Jackson back to the rear , before settling 2nd last on the inside
Nicholas Brown was able to ‘manoeuver’ Giant Jackson off the fence near the 600m, launched a run soon after , running on strongly to beat Yappas Courage also a nice run steered by the very reliable David Smith and Manoeuver Man ran 3rd driven by Jason Kittel
Someone deserves credit for the way Giant Jackson was driven , in its previous SA runs it had shown decent gate speed on occasions without a win, albiet mostly against a higher class of pacers
The incredible thing was the SP odds on the South Australian TAB of both winners, Giftedfromtheheart [$71] and Giant Jackson [$81]
Race caller Jim Jaques summed things up in his inimitable way, in the closing stages of Giant Jackson winning
” Nick Brown and Phil Westbury will it be a double? Yes it will an amazing double if you had it all up you’d be a millionaire.”
The staggering all up double works out to be the SP decimal odds of $5751
Congratulations to Phil and Queensland born Kerry , the wins are deserved
