Wow what a night!
Phoenix Park at Port Pirie came alive for the running of the 2022 Port Pirie Cup on March 19.
People were everywhere, it was great racing on the track, and a local syndicate named after Port Pirie’s Postcode Five 540 Syndicate then “cleaned up” with 4 winners.
They started with the Kara Martens trained Lets Get Shorty getting up in race one, Fighting Fire having just its third start for the group, went on to win race 3, the classy trotter C K Spur had no trouble taking out the Port Pirie Trotters Cup which was sponsored by the Syndicate. To round out the night, Midnight Calm took out race 9.
The Port Pirie Pacing Cup was won by the odds-on favourite Jimmy Mack, who won his twelfth race since joining Les Harding’s team, and the Pirie Derby went to Just Chai for trainer Jill Neilson, and regular driver Dani Hill. Jill’s mum, Elma West, the part owner of Just Chai, who is 87, made the trek to Pirie, and was on hand to collect the trophy, which was great to see.
