Pedigree of the Month by Peter Wharton

My Purple Patch is proving himself a smart three-year-old – he has won at his only two appearances to date including a 1:58.9 effort at Mount Gambier – and could develop into one of the best his age this season.

My Purple Patch belongs to one of New Zealand’s top families, being by Betting Line from Purple Royale, by Royal Mattjesty from Indigo Rose, a granddaughter of the Kentucky mare Roses In Paris, who established a great winning line for Peter and Lesley Medhurst, of Glencoe, who bred and race My Purple Patch.

She left the SA Oaks and triple Southern Cross winner Thorninmyside 1:58.9 ($160,666), the Golden Nursery and Southern Cross winner King Grin 1:56.7 ($132,436), the Gawler and Mt Gambier Derby victor Pete’s Elect 1:51.6 ($118,055) and the Mt Gambier Gold Cup hero Paris To Berlin (1:56.3).

Roses In Paris also figured as the second dam of the SA Breeders Plate and Southern Cross winner Forty Seven Flash 1:56.5 ($166,664), Flaming Hero 1:54.2 ($161,441), Surface To Air (1:53.6), Jax Navaro (1:56.6) and Ocean’s Predator (1:54.2), all metropolitan winners.

Betting Line, the sire of My Purple Patch, was one of the best performed sires to become available to Australian breeders, being by Bettor’s Delight, a grandson of Cam Fella. Betting Line had a record of 1:47.4 and was America’s leading three-year-old of his year.

His oldest stock in Australia are two-year-olds and include My Ultimate Levi, Saint Veran, Whataretheodds, Lightning Jash and others, and in America he sired the winners of $5.6 million including Abuckabett Hanover (1:49.2).

My Purple Patch’s first four dams – all above average racemares – have produced 26 foals, 21 winners, 12 in 2:00 and four $100,000 earners.

Purple Royale, the dam of My Purple Patch, won 26 races – including eight at Albion Park – and $131,091 in stakes and took a mile record of 1:53.1.

The grand-dam, Indigo Rose, won 10 races and became the dam of three winners including Big Bruce (1:54.,6), the winner of 16 and $80,116.

Catch A Bouquet, the third dam, won 11 and produced five winners including Devil Fish 1:57.4 (15 wins), Burston Holme (1:57.6), Mibestcatch (1:58.3) and Towelling, dam of Bee Gee’s Bandit 1:53.8 ($128,180), Royal Jacquard (1:53.5) and Maffioso Girl (1:56.2).

There is a proliferation of the blood of Most Happy Fella in the pedigree of My Purple Patch including three strong strains of No Nukes.

The gelding is a member of the Parisienne family, that which produced the Inter Dominion champion Boncel Benjamin, the A. G. Hunter Cup and Victoria Cup winner Lochinvar Art, Alta Orlando, Mach Da Vinci, Soho Burning Love and many others.
